Creative Writing with Jean Robison: Poetry

Join Author & Creative Writing Teacher Jean Robison for this Creative Writing Workshop: Poetry

This class will dive fully into the practice of several poetic devices, such as imagery, personification, metaphor, simile, and rhyme scheme, and we will see these devices used beautifully in select passages of poets of the ages, including Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert Frost, and Langston Hughes. The class will then switch to a unique writing exercise where we intentionally write a poem in the style and structure of an Emily Dickinson poem, including her notable use of dashes, capitalizations, and strong word choices that illustrate the theme of the poem. This fun learning technique allows the writer not just to honor the poet by emulating her structure and devices, but to see where it ultimately leads you in developing a unique voice of your own.
