Sprinting to the Finish Line

We are at the place in the school year where it feels, quite literally, like a sprint to the finish line. The dig deep push to get grades up and assignments turned in...or the dig deep push to pack one more lunch and catch one more school bus.

I was standing at my daughter's track meet last week, catching up with friends and parents on this topic, and was reminded of something I wrote last year. Words and feelings and images and sweat that many of us are seeing, smelling and feeling once again this year. I want to share it here in The Bird and Bear Collective, but with the addition of one final bit that happened while at the track meet, that makes any and all kinds of sprinting beautiful...

Sprinting...

my girl around a track, and me from moment to moment as a mom.

Sprinting...

my girl like a gazelle, lean and fast across the finish line, and me like a pack mule lugging laundry up the stairs and groceries from the car.

Sprinting...

my girl shooting off the line when the gun goes off, and me with lots of false starts as I trek in and out of the house grabbing the countless things we need (baseball cup), forgot (my phone), or have to return (overdue library books).

Sprinting...

my girl striving for states, and me striving to make sure I take a shower.

Sprinting...

my girl reaching for a water bottle out of breath and owning it, and me reaching for iced coffee and essential oils while taking deep cleansing breaths and telling myself, I got this.

Sprinting...

my girl tossing the uniform in the hamper at the end of the day, and me washing the uniform at the end of the day.

Sprinting...

my girl teaming and high giving with her people and me teaming and high giving with my husband, car pool partners and bleacher buddies.

Sprinting...

my girl doing a thing God made her for, and me doing a thing God made me for.

Sprinting sometimes looks like that picture up above of my girl, and sometimes it looks like the passenger seat of my car. But then there is a sometimes, like the one I captured at last week's track meet, that makes all the sprinting and crazy passengers seats with equipment bags, backpacks, half-eaten donuts, over due library books and sprouted bean plants worth every single bit.

A middle school boy competing in the 1-mile race who was struggling to finish the race. But then his teammates came alongside him, and those watching cheered him on, and that boy dug deep and sprinted his way across the finish line. It was beautiful and one that made tears quite literally jump out of my eyes and splash the inside of my sunglasses. Because this, is what this time of year is all about it. Teamwork and cheering each other on to cross the finish line...whether you do it with ease, or have dig deep and push through.
