For many, Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial beginning of summer and is often celebrated with hamburgers and watermelon, lemonade or beer and perhaps sun kissed shoulders and the first dip in the pool.
But let us remember, for Americans, Memorial Day is a time to honor the fallen heroes who bravely fought for our freedom. It’s a time to commemorate the veterans, current service men and women and families who protect our land from sea to shining sea.
So whether you are cheering on a kid at their weekend tournament, clinking glasses with neighbors in your backyard or simply getting stuff done over the long weekend, take a moment to remember those who lost their lives and sacrificed for our country. Tip your hat to our flag, take a moment for silence and if the opportunity avails give thanks to a veteran.
"And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier's tomb, and beauty weeps the brave."
